In the United States, 700 women die every year from pregnancy-related complications. More than half Maternal deaths in the united States happens the first days after birth.  SIXTY percent of these deaths are preventable!

 

WHAT IS A POSTPARTUM DOULA?

Postpartum Doulas “mother the mother” and “mother the family.” In our role, we provide much-needed support, helping to release the new mother’s feeling of being overwhelmed and to spot symptoms associated with postpartum depression. The support we give as postpartum doulas allows mothers to get the rest need to fully recover after giving birth.  Our training gives us the vital knowledge to recognize postpartum complications that can lead to a maternal death.

HOW CAN A POSTPARTUM DOULA HELP?

Postpartum recovery is a complex process. New parents have many questions. It is our goal to answer parents’ questions and provide education. Postpartum doulas help mothers/families by offering:

• Extensive knowledge on breastfeeding and any issues which may arise
• Infant feeding support (breast, bottle, or formula)
• Evidence-based information about newborn care
• Infant soothing techniques
• Education and demonstration on baby wearing
• Sibling inclusion and care
• Baby development/baby cues
• Safe sleep
• Bonding
• Developing routines/rhythms
• Caring for multiples (when applicable)
• Education and Community resources

WHY IS POSTPARTUM DOULA SERVICE IMPORTANT?

We recognize the disparities we are facing relative to the maternal mortality rates and understand the cultural bias that exist in our systems.  We desire a system that eliminates disparities, discrimination, and cultural bias.

It’s vital that mothers are provided a resting period to air feelings and recover from childbirth.  Postpartum doulas nurture mothers and cater to their needs to provide optimum healing.  Mothers deserve to heal and transition well after birth.
